...and it's me.
Celebrating my 40th birthday weekend can best be described as rock and roll heaven. On Friday night our tiny, idealic town hosted a private and very secret Red Hot Chili Peppers show at our beloved Miners Foundry. My husband and our friends at the venue worked so hard pulling this off. I am simply in awe of how smoothly it went, how well the secret was kept and how great it sounded.
It was the second time I've been included on the list of a secret Peppers show in a small venue. The first time was at the Troubadour in Los Angeles about 4 years ago. I think I was pregnant because I clearly remember sitting at the bar, longing for a beer and fearing my life was over; that I would never be up front dancing again, that I had been relegated to the purse clutchers in the back reminencing about the good old days and the bloody noses of mosh pits past.
Friday night I was on the list with some of my closest friends, all my sisters and up front, dancing.
It was a great place to find myself hours in to my 40's.
But I'm still a Mom.
And when the shoving started my mind went to my friend with her little son up front. He is a bass player and I asked him weeks ago what music he likes to listen to. "The Red Hot Chili Peppers", he responded.
"That's so cool. Anyone else?"
"Not really."
He had no idea the band was on their way to his home town and that he would be seeing his hero Flea in the flesh.

I also flashed on the moment I let Flea hold my new born Layla so many years ago. I was a nervous new mom still riding close to the hand sanitizer, scared to drive, overwhelmed, and out of ideas on how to make her stop crying. He was so sweet and calmed her instantly with a "pizza song".
Now I'm not arguing it was a family show (my kids were at home). But there was so much work that went into it and I can't forget all the shows I've been to in the past that ended in a set cut short by security or serious injury. The few big guys who were starting the nudging weren't a bad sort (actually pretty cute) but it was clear most people weren't into it.
"Someone should do something" I thought, "I'm someone."
I nudged my sagging boobs up a little, put on a smile, and asked the friendlier looking guy to take it easy. "I get it but they'll cut the set if it gets out of hand. Let's do 'up and down' not 'side to side'. Okay?"
I felt like a geek but I didn't care.
Because as I mentioned in my previous post I'm 40 and I don't give a shit what people think of me.
Although, I was glad he stopped and we danced and had fun.
What an amazing night.

Happy Birthday, Moira! And what a way to celebrate -- I'm very impressed and wish that I could have danced the night away with you guys, too! I think Flea has graced my daughter's school here in Los Angeles with his music --
